I have a great group of students in the lab, but some days they just make me smile with joy and pride. Today, one of the undergraduates in the lab, Jacob Cambre, sent me a rap he wrote about his project and has challenged the other projects in the lab to do the same. Stay tuned.... We're in Dr. Newman's lab, studying stem cells We love research so much, can't you tell. When in culture we see if cells differentiate I need you to understand that we will be great. Imma bout to cut you off, call me gamma secretase You're not in our group,...so in your face. When Cardiac see our group their heart stops beating And Mediator thinks we're so good that we're cheating Always seeing if Notch is there so we say Hey We're always working hard, there no time for play. Call me siRNA because I'm about to knock you down You're like an inhibited receptor, you can't be bound Notch is a highly conserved intercellular pathway Word to your professor, that's all I want to say *mic drop* .Congratulations to undergraduate, India Pursell, who was awarded a Louisiana Board of Regents Supervised Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Grant. This grant will provide India with a stipend of $4,500 while she continues to work on the lab's interdisciplinary tissue engineering project. In 2015 Demi Sandel, a now senior undergraduate in the lab, was awarded this grant. This is a competitive award and I am very proud that we continue to have students in the lab being chosen for this honor. For a list of grants awarded to students in the lab visit the Grants & Awards page.
This past weekend Louisiana Tech University hosted the annual LaSPACE conference and Katie Whitehead was asked to give one of only four student oral presentations. I was unable to attend the conference, but I received pictures and compliments from colleagues who did attend noting that Katie did a great job with her oral and poster presentations.
Today was Industry Day in Shreveport, an event that brings researchers from Louisiana Tech and LSU Health together to discuss research projects and have a chance to visit. Students are invited to submit abstracts and present posters. This year Demi and Katie each presented posters on their work and a few of the newer students went along to gain some experience so that they know what it will be like when they present on their own work. I am proud of them all for taking the time on Saturday to share their research and learn about the research of others in North Louisiana. Today I was proud to watch Demi Sandel and Rachel Eddy describe their summer research experience with the Baylor SMART Program and the LBRN Program. They both did a great job talking about their research and promoting their programs to the 40 students and faculty in attendance.
This weekend Katie and I attended the inaugural Gulf Coast Vascular Research Consortium meeting. It was in Shreveport but brought people from Louisiana and Texas together to discuss research related to cardiovascular health and disease. We learned a lot about molecular mechanisms behind disease and shared our work on cardiac tissue engineering. This summer undergraduate Demi Sandel participated in the Baylor SMART Program. She was able to conduct research in a medical environment, meet students from across the country, and volunteer at the hospital. Demi worked as a research assistant in Dr. Benny Kaipparettu's lab studying the role of CD24 in adipogenesis and how it is linked to breast cancer. She also volunteered weekly at Texas Children's Hospital and shadowed at Texas Children's and various Baylor clinics. Welcome to the new blog and website for the Newman Lab at Louisiana Tech University! It has been a busy summer for all members of the lab on and off campus. Dr. Newman and PhD student Joseph Straub have been working hard in Ruston, while several students are gaining lab experience off campus. Demi Sandel is finishing up the Baylor School of Medicine SMART Program, and Katie Whitehead and Rachel Eddy are concluding their experience with the Louisiana Biomedical Research Network Summer program. One more month of summer vacation and then everyone returns to Ruston to keep things moving over here. Can't wait to hear about their experiences and see what they all learned!
